The Steam shelled backpack is the outcome of a soft goods course taken during the fall 2015 semester. Throughout the semester I developed many ideas for bags, from simple sling designs to fully equipped ski touring bags. Learning from the limitations of different materials and the feedback of my peers I continued iterating and experimenting. Finally landing on a design using mixed materials for structure and beauty.
I constructed a final model by steam-bending re-sawn New England Red Oak boards and attaching it with two-inch tubular webbing to the soft bag mad with a coated Cordura nylon that utilizes the protection of fully waterproof YKK zippers. I also 3d printed custom G-Hooks for the strap connection and tightening.
