I love the outdoors and there has been a recent boom in outdoor gear production. However, there is an increased need for responsible insulation. Down jackets are very function, but with a serious moral cost.
In this project I wanted to look at how other organisms insulate themselves from their climate. I ended up looking at trees and in particular how they use different barks and wood layers to provide their protection. Trees are interesting in regards to insulation because they can’t move to get away from the elements. This has caused trees to develop unique mechanisms for survival through drastic temperature changes.
This project is still underway and I hope to have a final prototype of this cloth to test its H-value.
